Savitri Devi (30.05.1924–02.01.2009)
Savitri Devi was a
descendant of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, writer and poet of the freedom struggle
era. She was born on 30 May 1924 in Nihalpur village of Allahabad. Her
inclination towards literature developed in the proximity of a learned family
and literary aunts, such as Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. She received her early
education at Annie Besant College in Kashi. Pandit Vishwanath Prasad Mishra
praised her writing in the seventh grade itself.
Her works started
getting published from 1937. Her works include poetry texts, novels, plays, and
story collections like Anuttre, Mrigamad, Gunga Samudra, Agni Venu. In the year
1942, she was awarded the title of Sahitya Ratna for her remarkable contribution
in the field of literature. In 1994, Abhijnan Parishad honoured him with
"Sahitya-Gaurav Alankaran". He received Radhakrishna Award in 2008
for the epic Amriteya Buddha.
"Amriteya
Buddha" is an epic composed by Savitri Devi, which presents a deep
depiction of the life and philosophy of Lord Buddha. The epic depicts his
compassion, sacrifice and journey of self-realization in a poetic style. Deep
philosophical and poetic beauty make it unique.
